Indications

  • Treatment of infections caused by sensitive Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria
  • Upper respiratory tract infections
  • Lower respiratory tract infections
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Skin and soft tissue infections

Pharmacology

  • Semisynthetic broad spectrum bactericidal antibiotic
  • Active against both gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms
  • Inhibits cross-linking process of bacterial cell wall

Dosage & Administration

  • Oral administration for adults and children
  • Injectable administration for adults and children
  • Dosage adjustment in renal impairment
  • Maximum daily dosage: 4 gm

Interaction

  • Concomitant use of nephrotoxic drugs may increase risk of kidney damage
  • Enhanced renal toxicity with diuretics and probenecid

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins

Precautions & Warnings

  • Risk of superinfection with prolonged use
  • Administration with care in patients hypersensitive to penicillins
  • Cephalosporin antibiotics may cause a positive result in Coombs’ testing
  • May cause false positive urine glucose result
  • Dosage adjustment necessary in renal impairment
  • Contains lactose
  • Dosage recommendations for renal impairment patients and haemodialysis patients

Use in Special Populations

  • Dosage recommendations for patients with renal impairment and haemodialysis patients
  • Higher doses may be required for chronic or severe infections
  • Regular bacteriological and clinical monitoring required
  • Transfer from intramuscular/intravenous to oral treatment at same dosage level
  • Paediatric dosages should not exceed those specified for adults

Overdose Effects

  • Non-specific symptoms like nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and gastric upsets
  • Supportive treatment
  • Gastric lavage if large amount ingested

Storage Conditions

  • Freshly prepare Suspension
  • Use reconstituted Suspension within 7-14 days
  • Use Injection solutions within 2 hours or 12 hours if refrigerated
  • Retain potency for 12 hours when stored at 5°C
  • Do not use after expiry date
  • Keep out of reach of children
  • To be dispensed only on prescription of a registered physician
