Medicine Details

Indications

  • Treatment of infections caused by sensitive Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria
  • Upper respiratory tract infections
  • Lower respiratory tract infections
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Skin and soft tissue infections

Pharmacology

  • Semisynthetic broad spectrum bactericidal antibiotic
  • Active against both gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms
  • Inhibits cross-linking process in cell walls of bacteria
  • Causes lysis of bacteria due to external osmotic pressure

Dosage & Administration

  • For oral administration - Adults:
    • Urinary tract infections
    • Respiratory tract infections
    • Skin and soft tissue infections
  • For oral administration - Children:
    • Total daily dose based on weight
    • Otitis media
    • Maximum daily dosage
  • For injectable administration - Adult:
    • Usual dose
    • Prophylaxis dose
  • For injectable administration - Children:
    • Dose based on weight

Interaction

  • Increased risk of kidney damage with nephrotoxic drugs
  • Possibility of renal toxicity with diuretics and probenecid

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins
