Indications

  • Treatment of infections caused by sensitive Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria
  • Upper respiratory tract infections
  • Lower respiratory tract infections
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Skin and soft tissue infections

Pharmacology

  • Semisynthetic broad spectrum bactericidal antibiotic
  • Active against gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms
  • Inhibits cross-linking process in the cell wall of bacteria

Dosage & Administration

  • Adult dosage for urinary tract infections
  • Adult dosage for respiratory tract infections
  • Adult dosage for skin and soft tissue infections
  • Children dosage for otitis media
  • Maximum daily dosage for children
  • Dosage for elderly and patients with impaired renal or hepatic function
  • Usual injectable dose for adults and prophylaxis

Interaction

  • Concomitant use of nephrotoxic drugs
  • Enhanced risk of kidney damage with diuretics

  • Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins

Precautions & Warnings

  • Prolonged use may result in superinfection
  • Administer with care to patients hypersensitive to penicillins
  • Cephalosporin antibiotics may cause a positive result in Coombs’ testing
  • May cause a false positive urine glucose result
  • Dosage adjustment in renal impairment
  • Contains lactose, not for patients with rare hereditary problems

Use in Special Populations

  • Recommended doses for patients with renal impairment
  • Higher doses may be required for chronic or severe infections
  • Recommendations for chronic urinary tract infections
  • Paediatric dosages not to exceed those specified for adults
