Indications

  • Treatment of infections caused by sensitive Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria
  • Upper respiratory tract infections
  • Lower respiratory tract infections
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Skin and soft tissue infections

Pharmacology

  • Semisynthetic broad spectrum bactericidal antibiotic
  • Active against gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms
  • Inhibits cross-linking process in bacteria

Dosage & Administration

  • Oral administration - Adults:
    • Urinary tract infections
    • Respiratory tract infections
    • Skin and soft tissue infections
  • Oral administration - Children:
    • Total daily dose of 25 to 50mg/kg
    • Otitis media
    • Maximum daily dosage: 4 gm
  • Injectable administration - Adult:
    • Usual dose is 2-4 gm daily in four equally divided doses
    • Prophylaxis dose of 1-2 gm intramuscularly or intravenously
  • Injectable administration - Children:
    • Dose is 50-100 mg/kg daily in four equally divided doses
    • Up to 300 mg/kg daily in severe infection

Interaction

  • Concomitant use of nephrotoxic drugs may increase the risk of kidney damage
  • Diuretics and probenecid enhance possibility of renal toxicity

Contraindications

  • Known or suspected hypersensitivity to cephalosporins

Precautions & Warnings

  • Prolonged use may result in the development of superinfection
  • Administered with care to patients hypersensitive to penicillins
  • May cause false positive urine glucose result
  • Dosage adjustment is necessary in renal impairment
  • Contains lactose

Use in Special Populations

  • Recommended doses for patients not on haemodialysis
  • Doses for patients on chronic, intermittent haemodialysis
  • Higher doses may be required for chronic or severe infections

Overdose Effects

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Gastric upsets
  • Supportive treatment recommended
  • Gastric lavage may be necessary

Storage Conditions

  • Prepared Suspension should be used within 7-14 days
  • Injection solutions should be used within 2 hours if kept at room temperature
  • Retains potency for 12 hours when stored at 5°C
  • Variation in color does not affect potency
