Description

  • Cephradine is a semisynthetic broad spectrum bactericidal antibiotic
  • Active against both gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms
  • Indicated for the treatment of infections caused by sensitive Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria
  • Contraindicated in patients with known or suspected hypersensitivity to cephalosporins
  • Can be administered orally and via injection

Recommended Dosage

  • Adults: 500mg-1g four times daily or as directed by a healthcare professional
  • Children: 25-50mg/kg given in two or four equally divided doses or as directed by a healthcare professional

Pharmacological Action

  • Inhibits cross-linking process in the cell wall of bacteria
  • Causes lysis of bacteria due to external osmotic pressure

Interaction

  • Concomitant use of nephrotoxic drugs with Cefradine may increase the risk of kidney damage
  • Diuretics and probenecid enhanced the possibility of renal toxicity

Use in Special Populations

  • Dosage adjustments for patients with renal impairment
  • Higher doses may be required for chronic or severe infections
  • Regular bacteriological and clinical monitoring required for chronic urinary tract infections

Overdose Effects

  • Non-specific symptoms including nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and gastric upsets
  • Treatment is mainly supportive, gastric lavage may be necessary if a large amount has been ingested
