Indications
- Treatment of infections caused by sensitive Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria
- Upper respiratory tract infections
- Lower respiratory tract infections
- Urinary tract infections
- Skin and soft tissue infections
- Active against Staphylococci, Streptococci, E. coli, Klebsiella spp, and more
- Semisynthetic broad-spectrum bactericidal antibiotic
Pharmacology
- Main site of action is the cell wall of bacteria
- Inhibits cross-linking process in peptidoglycan
- Bactericidal antibiotic against gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms
- Sensitive to both penicillinase producing and nonproducing Staphylococci
Dosage & Administration
- Oral and injectable administration
- Dosage varies for adults, children, and elderly
- Total daily dose based on type and severity of infection
- Dosage adjustments required for renal impairment
- Maximum daily dosage: 4 gm
Interaction
- Concomitant use with nephrotoxic drugs may increase kidney damage
- Enhanced risk of renal toxicity with diuretics and probenecid
Contraindications
- Not to be used in patients with known or suspected hypersensitivity to cephalosporins
