Indications

  • Treatment of infections caused by sensitive Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria
  • Upper respiratory tract infections
  • Lower respiratory tract infections
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Skin and soft tissue infections
  • Active against Staphylococci, Streptococci, E. coli, Klebsiella spp, and more
  • Semisynthetic broad-spectrum bactericidal antibiotic

Pharmacology

  • Main site of action is the cell wall of bacteria
  • Inhibits cross-linking process in peptidoglycan
  • Bactericidal antibiotic against gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms
  • Sensitive to both penicillinase producing and nonproducing Staphylococci

Dosage & Administration

  • Oral and injectable administration
  • Dosage varies for adults, children, and elderly
  • Total daily dose based on type and severity of infection
  • Dosage adjustments required for renal impairment
  • Maximum daily dosage: 4 gm

Interaction

  • Concomitant use with nephrotoxic drugs may increase kidney damage
  • Enhanced risk of renal toxicity with diuretics and probenecid

Contraindications

  • Not to be used in patients with known or suspected hypersensitivity to cephalosporins
