Indications
- Upper respiratory tract infections
- Lower respiratory tract infections
- Urinary tract infections
- Skin and soft tissue infections
Pharmacology
- Semisynthetic broad spectrum bactericidal antibiotic
- Active against gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms
- Inhibits cross-linking process in bacteria cell wall
Dosage & Administration
- Oral administration - Adults:
- Urinary tract infections: 500mg-1g four times daily
- Respiratory tract infections: 250-500mg four times daily
- Skin and soft tissue infections: 250-500mg four times daily
- Oral administration - Children:
- Total daily dose of 25 to 50mg/kg
- Maximum daily dosage: 4 gm
- Injectable administration - Adults:
- Usual dose: 2-4 gm daily in four equally divided doses
- Injectable administration - Children:
- Dose: 50-100 mg/kg daily in four equally divided doses
Interaction
- Increased risk of kidney damage with nephrotoxic drugs
- Enhanced renal toxicity with diuretics and probenecid
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins

Pregnancy & Lactation
- Safety in pregnancy not established
- Excreted in breast milk
- Caution in lactating mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- Prolonged use may result in superinfection
- Administration with care to patients hypersensitive to penicillins
- May cause a false positive urine glucose result
- Dosage adjustment necessary in renal impairment
- Contains lactose
Use in Special Populations
- Recommended doses for patients with renal impairment and on haemodialysis
- Higher doses may be required for chronic or severe infections
Overdose Effects
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea
- Gastric upsets
- Supportive treatment
- Gastric lavage if large amount ingested

Storage Conditions
- Sicef Suspension should be freshly prepared
- Reconstituted Suspension should be used within 7-14 days
- Injection solutions should be used within 2 hours (room temperature) or 12 hours (5°C)
- Do not use later than the date of expiry
