Indications

  • Gram-positive bacteria treatment
  • Gram-negative bacteria treatment
  • Respiratory tract infection treatment
  • Urinary tract infection treatment
  • Skin and soft tissue infection treatment

Pharmacology

  • Broad spectrum bactericidal antibiotic
  • Active against gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms
  • Inhibits cross-linking process of bacterial cell wall

Dosage & Administration

  • Oral administration for adults and children
  • Injectable administration for adults and children
  • Dosage adjustment for elderly and patients with impaired renal or hepatic function

Interaction

  • Increased risk of kidney damage with nephrotoxic drugs
  • Enhanced renal toxicity with diuretics and probenecid

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins

Precautions & Warnings

  • Administration with care to patients hypersensitive to penicillins
  • Possible Coombs’ test positivity
  • Possible false positive urine glucose result
  • Dosage adjustment in renal impairment
  • Avoidance in patients with rare hereditary problems of galactose intolerance

Use in Special Populations

  • Recommended doses for patients with renal impairment
  • Higher doses for chronic or severe infections
  • Bacteriological and clinical monitoring for urinary tract infections
  • Transfer from intramuscular/intravenous to oral treatment

Overdose Effects

  • Non-specific symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea
  • Supportive treatment
  • Gastric lavage if large amount ingested
