Indications

  • Treatment of infections caused by sensitive Gram-positive bacteria
  • Treatment of infections caused by sensitive Gram-negative bacteria
  • Treats upper respiratory tract infections like sinusitis, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, bronchitis
  • Treats lower respiratory tract infections like pneumonia
  • Treats urinary tract infections like cystitis, pyelonephritis
  • Treats skin and soft tissue infections like cellulitis, impetigo

Pharmacology

  • Broad-spectrum bactericidal antibiotic
  • Active against both gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms
  • Inhibits cross-linking in bacterial cell walls
  • Cell wall lysis due to external osmotic pressure

Dosage & Administration

  • Oral administration for adults and children
  • Dosage varies based on infection severity
  • Dosage adjustment for elderly and patients with impaired renal or hepatic function
  • Injectable administration for adults and children
  • Prophylactic doses for preoperative use

Interaction

  • Risk of kidney damage with concomitant use of nephrotoxic drugs
  • Enhanced renal toxicity with diuretics and probenecid

Contraindications

  • Not to be used in patients with known hypersensitivity to cephalosporins
