Medicine Details

Indications

  • Treatment of infections caused by sensitive Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria
  • Upper respiratory tract infections
  • Lower respiratory tract infections
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Skin and soft tissue infections

Pharmacology

  • Semisynthetic broad spectrum bactericidal antibiotic
  • Active against both gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms
  • Inhibits cross-linking process in the cell wall of bacteria

Dosage & Administration

  • For oral administration in adults and children
  • Maximum daily dosage: 4 gm
  • Dosage adjustment necessary in renal impairment
  • Recommendations for patients on chronic, intermittent hemodialysis
  • Higher doses of up to 1 gm four times daily may be required for chronic or severe infections

Interaction

  • Concomitant use of nephrotoxic drugs may increase risk of kidney damage
  • Diuretics and probenecid enhance possibility of renal toxicity

Contraindications

  • Not to be used in patients with known or suspected hypersensitivity to cephalosporins

Pregnancy & Lactation

Precautions & Warnings

  • Prolonged use may result in development of superinfection
  • Administered with care to patients hypersensitive to penicillins
  • May cause false positive urine glucose results
  • Dosage adjustment necessary in renal impairment
  • Contains lactose

Use in Special Populations

  • Recommendations for patients not on hemodialysis
  • Recommendations for patients on chronic, intermittent hemodialysis
  • Higher doses may be required for chronic or severe infections
  • Regular bacteriological and clinical monitoring required in chronic urinary tract infections

Overdose Effects

  • Non-specific symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea
  • Supportive treatment
  • Gastric lavage may be necessary if large amount ingested

Storage Conditions

  • SK-cef Suspension should be freshly prepared
  • Reconstituted Suspension should be used within 7-14 days
  • Injection solutions should be used within 2 hours at room temperature
  • Retain potency for 12 hours when stored at 5°C
  • Reconstituted solutions may vary in color but does not affect potency
  • Keep out of the reach of children
  • To be dispensed only on the prescription of a registered physician
