Medicine Details

Indications

  • Upper respiratory tract infections
  • Lower respiratory tract infections
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Skin and soft tissue infections
  • Gram-positive microorganisms
  • Gram-negative microorganisms

Pharmacology

Bactericidal antibiotic, active against gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms, inhibits cross-linking process in cell wall of bacteria

Dosage & Administration

  • For oral administration - Adults:
    • 500mg four times daily
    • 1g twice daily
  • For oral administration - Children:
    • Total daily dose of 25 to 50mg/kg given in two or four equally divided doses
    • Maximum daily dosage: 4 gm
  • For injectable administration - Adult: 2-4 gm daily in four equally divided doses
  • For injectable administration - Children:
    • 50-100 mg/kg daily in four equally divided doses
    • Up to 300 mg/kg daily in severe infection

Interaction

Increased risk of kidney damage with nephrotoxic drugs, enhanced renal toxicity with diuretics and probenecid

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins

Precautions & Warnings

  • Development of superinfection with prolonged use
  • Risk of cross-sensitivity between beta-lactam antibiotics
  • Positive result in Coombs’ testing
  • False positive urine glucose result with certain testing methods
  • Dosage adjustment necessary in renal impairment
  • Contains lactose, caution for patients with specific hereditary problems

Use in Special Populations

Recommendations for renal impairment and patients on haemodialysis, higher doses may be required for chronic or severe infections

Overdose Effects

Non-specific symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and gastric upsets, treatment is mainly supportive

Storage Conditions

  • Supracef Suspension should be freshly prepared
  • Reconstituted Suspension should be used within 7 days if kept at room temperature
  • Reconstituted Suspension should be used within 14 days if kept in a refrigerator
  • Supracef Injection solutions should be used within 2 hours when kept at room temperature
  • When stored at 5°C, solutions retain potency for 12 hours
  • Reconstituted solutions may vary in colour from light to straw yellow, does not affect potency
  • Do not use later than the date of expiry
  • Keep all medicines out of the reach of children
  • To be dispensed only on the prescription of a registered physician
