Pharmacological Action
- Bactericidal
- Inhibits cell wall cross-linking
- Active against gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms
- Effective against penicillinase producing and non-producing staphylococci
Dosage and Administration
- 500mg four times daily for urinary tract infections (adults)
- 1g twice daily for urinary tract infections (adults)
- 250 to 500mg four times daily for respiratory tract infections (adults)
- 500mg to 1g twice daily for respiratory tract infections (adults)
- 250 to 500mg four times daily for skin and soft tissue infections (adults)
- 500mg to 1g twice daily for skin and soft tissue infections (adults)
- 25 to 50mg/kg total daily dose for children
- Maximum daily dosage of 4 gm
- 2-4 gm daily in four equally divided doses for adults (injectable administration)
- 50-100 mg/kg daily in four equally divided doses for children (injectable administration)
Interaction
Nephrotoxic drugs may increase risk of kidney damage when used concomitantly

Precautions and Warnings
- Risk of superinfection with prolonged use
- Careful administration to patients hypersensitive to penicillins
- Potential false positive urine glucose result
- Dosage adjustment required in renal impairment
- Contains lactose (avoid in hereditary lactase deficiencies)
Use in Special Populations
- Recommended doses for renal impairment
- Caution in patients on haemodialysis
- Higher doses may be required for chronic or severe infections
- Regular bacteriological and clinical monitoring for chronic urinary tract infections
- Paediatric dosages should not exceed those specified for adults
Overdose Effects
Non-specific symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, gastric upsets
