Indications
- Treats infections caused by sensitive Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria
- Treats upper respiratory tract infections like sinusitis, pharyngitis, and tonsillitis
- Treats lower respiratory tract infections like bronchitis and pneumonia
- Treats urinary tract infections like cystitis and pyelonephritis
- Treats skin and soft tissue infections like abscess and cellulitis
- Susceptible microorganisms: Staphylococci, Streptococci, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella spp, Haemophilus influenza, Shigella spp, Salmonella spp
- Treats infections caused by penicillin-sensitive and resistant strains

Pharmacology
- Cephradine is a broad spectrum bactericidal antibiotic
- Active against both gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms
- Inhibits cell wall cross-linking process
- Causes lysis of bacteria due to external osmotic pressure
Dosage & Administration
- For oral administration in adults and children
- Different dosage for urinary tract infections, respiratory tract infections, and skin infections
- Extra caution for elderly, renal impairment patients
- For injectable administration in adults and children
- Dosage adjustment necessary in renal impairment
Interaction
- Risk of kidney damage when used with nephrotoxic drugs
- Increased renal toxicity with diuretics and probenecid
Contraindications
- Not to be used in patients with known or suspected hypersensitivity to cephalosporins
Side Effects
- Limited to gastrointestinal disturbances and hypersensitivity phenomena
- More likely to occur in individuals with allergy history
- Rare side effects like glossitis, heartburn, dizziness, skin reactions, and joint pains
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Safety in pregnancy not established
- Excreted in breast milk
- Caution advised in lactating mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- Prolonged use may result in superinfection
- Administer with care to patients hypersensitive to penicillins
- May cause false positive urine glucose result
Use in Special Populations
- Specific doses recommended for patients with renal impairment or on haemodialysis
- Higher doses may be required for chronic or severe infections
- Regular bacteriological and clinical monitoring required in chronic urinary tract infections
Overdose Effects
- Non-specific symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and gastric upsets

Storage Conditions
- Suspension should be freshly prepared
- Reconstituted suspension should be used within 7-14 days
- Injection solutions should be used within 2 hours when kept at room temperature
- Solutions retain potency for 12 hours when stored at 5°C
- Do not use after the date of expiry
