Pharmacology

  • Second generation cephalosporin antibiotic
  • Stability against β-lactamase inactivation
  • Broad spectrum of activity

Dosage & Administration

  • Adult dose: 250 mg every 8 hours
  • Pediatric dose: 20 mg/kg/day
  • Renal impairment dosage
  • Haemodialysis dosage
  • Geriatric use

Interaction

  • False-positive reaction for glucose in the urine
  • Interaction with oral anticoagulants (Warfarin)

Contraindications

  • Known allergy to the Cephalosporin group of antibiotics

Pregnancy & Lactation

Precautions & Warnings

  • Avoid use in absence of bacterial infection
  • Risk of developing drug-resistant bacteria
  • Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms
  • Inhibited renal excretion by Probenecid
  • Prescribed with caution in individuals with a history of gastrointestinal disease
  • Careful inquiry about previous hypersensitivity reactions
  • Administered cautiously to penicillin-sensitive patients
