Indications

Pharmacology
- Second generation cephalosporin antibiotic

Dosage & Administration
- Usual adult dose of 250mg every 8 hours
- Maximum dosage of 4g/day for severe infections
- Pediatric dosage of 20mg/kg/day

Interaction
- False-positive reaction for glucose in the urine
- Interactions with oral anticoagulants

Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with known allergy to the Cephalosporin group of antibiotics
Side Effects
- Gastro-intestinal symptoms
- Rare cases of transient hepatitis and cholestatic jaundice
- Occurrence of fever, abdominal pain, superinfection, renal dysfunction
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No adequate studies in pregnant women
- Caution in use during pregnancy and lactation
- Detection of small amounts in mother's milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Prescribing in the absence of proven bacterial infection
- Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms
- Inhibition of renal excretion by Probenecid
- Caution in individuals with a history of gastrointestinal disease
