Indications
- Treatment of respiratory tract infections

Pharmacology
- Second generation cephalosporin antibiotic
- Stability against b-lactamase inactivation
- Broad spectrum of activity
- Active against various organisms
- Effective in the eradication of Streptococci from the nasopharynx
Dosage & Administration
- Usual adult dose of 250 mg every 8 hours
- Double doses for severe infections
- Maximum dosage of 4 g/day
- Usual daily dosage for pediatric patients
- Safety and effectiveness for use in infants
- Dosage adjustments for patients with renal impairment
- Recommended dosage for patients undergoing hemodialysis
- No identified differences in responses between the elderly and younger patients
Interaction
- False-positive reaction for glucose in the urine
- Reports of increased anticoagulant effect
- Rare reports of increased prothrombin time
- Regular monitoring of prothrombin time

Contraindications
- Known allergy to the Cephalosporin group of antibiotics
Side Effects
- Gastro-intestinal symptoms including diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting
- Transient hepatitis and cholestatic jaundice
- Fever, abdominal pain, superinfection
- Renal dysfunction, toxic nephropathy, hemorrhage
- Elevated LDH and pancytopenia
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
- Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
- Small amounts detected in mother's milk
- Effect on nursing infants is not known
- Caution when administered to a nursing woman
Precautions & Warnings
- Prescribing in the absence of a proven bacterial infection
- Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms
- Cautious prescription in individuals with a history of gastrointestinal disease
- Careful inquiry about previous hypersensitivity reactions
- Caution in penicillin-sensitive patients
