Indications

Pharmacology

  • Second generation cephalosporin antibiotic

Dosage & Administration

  • Usual adult dose of 250 mg every 8 hours
  • Double doses for severe infections
  • Maximum dosage of 4 g/day

  • Dosage adjustments for patients with renal impairment
  • Recommended dosage for patients undergoing hemodialysis

Interaction

  • False-positive reaction for glucose in the urine

Contraindications

Side Effects

  • Gastro-intestinal symptoms including diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting

  • Fever, abdominal pain, superinfection
  • Renal dysfunction, toxic nephropathy, hemorrhage
  • Elevated LDH and pancytopenia

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
  • Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
  • Small amounts detected in mother's milk
  • Effect on nursing infants is not known
  • Caution when administered to a nursing woman

Precautions & Warnings

  • Prescribing in the absence of a proven bacterial infection
  • Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms
  • Cautious prescription in individuals with a history of gastrointestinal disease
  • Careful inquiry about previous hypersensitivity reactions
  • Caution in penicillin-sensitive patients

Overdose Effects
