Description
- Clobac is a second generation cephalosporin antibiotic with stability against b-lactamase inactivation and possesses a broad spectrum of activity. It is indicated in the treatment of respiratory tract infections, otitis media, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, urinary tract infections, and skin and skin structure infections caused by various organisms.
Dosage and Administration
- Adult dose: 250 mg every 8 hours, Pediatric dose: 20 mg/kg/day in divided doses every 8 hours, with dosage adjustments based on age and renal function. For hemodialysis patients, a specific dosing regimen is recommended.
Indications
- Treatment of respiratory tract infections, otitis media, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, urinary tract infections, and skin and skin structure infections caused by specific bacterial strains.
Mode of Action
- Cefaclor has stability against b-lactamase inactivation and is active against a range of organisms including Streptococci, Staphylococci, Escherichia coli, Haemophilus influenzae, and Branhamella catarrhalis. It is generally effective in eradicating Streptococci from the nasopharynx.
Interaction
- Potential false-positive reaction for glucose in the urine, increased anticoagulant effect when administered concomitantly with oral anticoagulants, with monitoring of prothrombin time recommended.
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with known allergy to the Cephalosporin group of antibiotics.
Side Effects
- Possible gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting, transient hepatitis, cholestatic jaundice, fever, abdominal pain, superinfection, renal dysfunction, toxic nephropathy, hemorrhage, elevated LDH, and pancytopenia.
Pregnancy and Lactation
- Limited data available; caution advised during pregnancy and lactation due to detection in mother's milk and unknown effects on nursing infants.
Precautions and Warnings
- Reserved for proven or strongly suspected bacterial infections, potential risk of developing drug-resistant bacteria, caution in prolonged use to avoid overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms, caution in patients with a history of gastrointestinal disease, careful inquiry for previous hypersensitivity reactions to Clobac, Cephalosporins, Penicillins or other drugs.
Overdose Effects
- Potential symptoms include nausea, vomiting, epigastric distress, and diarrhea.
