Description
- Cephalosporin antibiotic with broad spectrum of activity
Indications
- For respiratory tract infections
- Otitis media
- Pharyngitis and tonsillitis
- Urinary tract infections
- Skin and skin structure infections
Pharmacology
- Stability against b-lactamase inactivation
- Active against various organisms
- Effective in eradication of Streptococci from the nasopharynx
Dosage and administration
- Usual adult dose of 250 mg every 8 hours
- Pediatric daily dosage of 20 mg/kg/day
- Dosage adjustments for renal impairment
- Recommended dosages for different age groups
Interaction
- Potential false-positive reaction for glucose in urine
- Reports of increased anticoagulant effect when administered concomitantly with oral anticoagulants
- Recommendation for regular monitoring of prothrombin time in such cases
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with known allergy to Cephalosporin group of antibiotics
Side effects
- Possible gastro-intestinal symptoms
- Rare reports of transient hepatitis and cholestatic jaundice
- Occurrence of fever, abdominal pain, superinfection, renal dysfunction, toxic nephropathy, and pancytopenia
Pregnancy and lactation
- Caution advised for use during pregnancy and nursing
- Detection of small amounts in mother's milk
- Effect on nursing infants not known
Precautions and warnings
- Unlikely benefit in absence of proven bacterial infection
- Risk of development of drug-resistant bacteria
- Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms
- Caution with history of gastrointestinal disease, particularly colitis
- Careful inquiry for previous hypersensitivity reactions
- Cautious administration to penicillin-sensitive patients and those with demonstrated allergy
Overdose effects
- Toxic symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, epigastric distress, and diarrhea
