Description
- Navacef is an antibiotic indicated for the treatment of respiratory tract infections, otitis media, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, urinary tract infections, skin and skin structure infections.

Indications
- Treatment of respiratory tract infections, pneumonia, bronchitis, otitis media, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, urinary tract infections, and skin infections caused by specific bacteria
Pharmacology
- Stable against b-lactamase inactivation, active against various organisms including Streptococci, Staphylococci, Haemophilus influenzae, Escherichia coli, Proteus mirabilis, and Klebsiella species
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dosage of 250 mg every 8 hours, pediatric dosage based on weight and severity of infection, adjustments in renal impairment and during haemodialysis, no specific dose adjustments for geriatric use
Interaction
- Possible false-positive reaction for glucose in urine tests using Benedict's or Fehling's solutions, potential interaction with oral anticoagulants (Warfarin) leading to increased anticoagulant effect
Contraindications
- Known allergy to Cephalosporin group of antibiotics
Side Effects
- Possible gastrointestinal symptoms, transient hepatitis, cholestatic jaundice, fever, abdominal pain, superinfection, renal dysfunction, toxic nephropathy, hemorrhage, elevated LDH, pancytopenia
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed, caution advised during lactation due to detection of small amounts in mother's milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Prescribe only for proven or strongly suspected bacterial infections, potential for overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms, caution in individuals with a history of gastrointestinal disease, careful inquiry for previous hypersensitivity reactions
