Indications
- Treatment of respiratory tract infections

Pharmacology
- Second generation cephalosporin antibiotic
- Stability against b-lactamase inactivation
- Broad spectrum of activity
- Active against Streptococci, Staphylococci, E. coli, Proteus mirabilis, Klebsiella, Haemophilus influenzae
- Effective in eradicating Streptococci from the nasopharynx
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dose of 250 mg every 8 hours
- Doubled doses for severe infections
- Pediatric dose of 20 mg/kg/day
- Maximum dosage of 4 g/day
- Different dosage for different age groups
- Dose adjustments for renal impairment
- Dosing in patients undergoing haemodialysis
- No significant differences in geriatric use
Interaction
- May show false-positive reaction for glucose in urine
- Potential interaction with oral anticoagulants (Warfarin)
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with known allergy to Cephalosporin antibiotics
Side Effects
- Gastro-intestinal symptoms like diarrhea, nausea, vomiting
- Transient hepatitis and cholestatic jaundice reported rarely
- Other potential side effects like fever, abdominal pain, superinfection, renal dysfunction, toxic nephropathy, hemorrhage, elevated LDH, pancytopenia
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Limited study in pregnant women
- Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
- Small amounts detected in mother's milk
- Caution in nursing women
Precautions & Warnings
- Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms
- Caution in individuals with history of gastrointestinal disease
- Careful inquiry for previous hypersensitivity reactions
- Cautious administration to penicillin-sensitive patients

- Symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, epigastric distress, diarrhea
