Indications

Pharmacology
- Broad-spectrum bactericidal activity
- Effective against β-lactamase producing strains
Dosage
- 250 mg b.i.d. for adolescents and adults
- 20 mg/kg/day b.i.d. for pediatric patients
- 750 mg three times daily by IM or IV injection for adults
- 30 - 100 mg/kg/day given in 3 or 4 equally divided doses for children
- 3 gm IV injection three times daily for meningitis in adults
Administration
- Use of freshly reconstituted solution recommended
- Maintains potency for at least 24 hours at room temperature

- No potentially hazardous interactions reported
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with known allergy to Cephalosporins
Side Effects
- Infrequent and mild adverse effects
- May cause rashes and gastrointestinal disturbances
- Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of non susceptible organisms
Pregnancy & Lactation
- US FDA pregnancy category B
- Excreted in human milk
- Caution advised during administration to nursing women
Precautions & Warnings
- Should be given with care to patients receiving concurrent treatment with potent diuretics
- May be safely given to patients hypersensitive to penicillin
- Not likely to cause cross reactions at recommended dose levels
