Indications
- Treatment of infections caused by sensitive bacteria
- Pharyngitis/Tonsillitis caused by Streptococcus pyogenes

Pharmacology
Cefuroxime is a broad-spectrum bactericidal antibiotic effective against a wide range of common pathogens, including β-lactamase producing strains. It has good stability to bacterial β-lactamase and consequently, is active against many resistant strains.

- Adolescents and adults dosage for different infections

- Various dosage levels for different population groups and infections
Administration
The use of freshly reconstituted solution is recommended. It maintains potency for at least 24 hours at room temperature or 48 hours at 5<sup>o</sup> C

Contraindications
Cefuroxime is contraindicated in patients with known allergy to Cephalosporins
Side Effects
- Infrequent and generally mild and transient adverse effects
- Rashes and gastrointestinal disturbances
- Potential overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms like Candida with prolonged use
Pregnancy & Lactation
Cefuroxime falls under US FDA pregnancy category B. Caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman.
Precautions & Warnings
- Care should be given to patients receiving concurrent treatment with potent diuretics
- Caution for patients with history of colitis
- Cross reactions with penicillin hypersensitivity reported
- Furex is not likely to cause cross reactions at recommended dose levels
