Indications

  • Treatment of infections caused by sensitive bacteria
  • Pharyngitis/Tonsillitis caused by Streptococcus pyogenes
  • Acute Bacterial Otitis Media caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis
  • Acute bacterial maxillary sinusitis caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae or Haemophilus influenzae
  • Lower respiratory tract infections including pneumonia caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Klebsiella spp., Staphylococcus aureus, E. coli
  • Skin and skin-structure infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus pyogenes
  • Urinary tract infections caused by E.coli or Klebsiella pneumoniae
  • Bone and Joint Infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus
  • Gonorrhoea caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae
  • Early Lyme Disease (erythema migrans) caused by Borrelia burgdorferi
  • Acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis
  • Secondary bacterial infections of Acute bronchitis caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Haemophilus parainfluenzae

Pharmacology

  • Broad-spectrum bactericidal activity
  • Effective against β-lactamase producing strains
  • Good stability to bacterial β-lactamase

Dosage

  • 250 mg b.i.d. for adolescents and adults (Pharyngitis/Tonsillitis)
  • 250 mg b.i.d. for 10 days in Acute bacterial maxillary sinusitis
  • 250-500 mg b.i.d. for 10 days in Acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis
  • 250-500 mg b.i.d. for 5-10 days in Secondary bacterial infections of Acute bronchitis
  • 750 mg three times daily for adults by IM or IV injection
  • 30 - 100 mg/kg/day for children above 3 months of age

Administration

  • Use of freshly reconstituted solution recommended
  • Maintains potency for at least 24 hours at room temperature or 48 hours at 5°C

Interaction

  • No potentially hazardous interactions reported

Contraindications

  • Contraindicated in patients with known allergy to Cephalosporins

Side Effects

  • Adverse effects occurred infrequently
  • Reported effects include rashes and gastrointestinal disturbances
  • Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • US FDA pregnancy category B
  • No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
  • Excreted in human milk

Precautions & Warnings

  • Given with care to patients receiving concurrent treatment with potent diuretics
  • Cephalosporin antibiotics may be given safely to patients hypersensitive to penicillin
  • Cross reactions have been reported

Reconstitution

  • For 750 mg intramuscular injection: Add 3 ml water for injection to vial and then shake gently for dispersion
  • For 750 mg intravenous injection: Add 8 ml water for injection to vial and then shake gently for dispersion
  • For 1.5 g intravenous injection: Add 16 ml water for injection to vial and then shake gently for dispersion

Storage Conditions

  • Store in a cool, dry place (below 30°C)
  • Away from light & moisture
  • Keep out of reach of children
