Indications
- Pharyngitis/Tonsillitis caused by Streptococcus pyogenes
- Acute Bacterial Otitis Media caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis
- Acute bacterial maximally sinusitis caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae or Haemophilus influenzae
- Lower respiratory tract infections including pneumonia caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Klebsiella spp., Staphylococcus aureus

Pharmacology
Cefuroxime is a well-characterized and effective antibacterial agent with broad-spectrum bactericidal activity against a wide range of common pathogens, including β-lactamase producing strains.
Dosage
- 250 mg b.i.d. for adolescents and adults for various infections
- 20 mg/kg/day b.i.d. for paediatric patients for various infections
- 750 mg three times daily for adults by IM or IV injection in severe infections
Administration
Freshly reconstituted solution is recommended, with good stability at room temperature or 5°C for at least 24-48 hours

Contraindications
Contraindicated in patients with known allergy to Cephalosporins
Side Effects
- Infrequent and generally mild and transient adverse effects
- Reported effects include rashes, gastrointestinal disturbances, and overgrowth of non susceptible organisms
Pregnancy & Lactation
US FDA pregnancy category B, excreted in human milk, caution in use during pregnancy and lactation
Precautions & Warnings
Give with care to patients receiving concurrent treatment with potent diuretics and with history of colitis, cross reactions reported, likely not a problem at recommended dose levels
