Indications
- Treatment of infections caused by sensitive bacteria
- Pharyngitis/Tonsillitis caused by Streptococcus pyogenes
- Acute Bacterial Otitis Media caused by various bacteria
- Urinary tract infections caused by E.coli or Klebsiella pneumoniae
- Gonorrhoea caused by penicillinase-producing and non-penicillinase producing strains of Neisseria gonorrhoeae
- Early Lyme Disease (erythema migrans) caused by Borrelia burgdorferi
Pharmacology
Cefuroxime is a well-characterized and effective antibacterial agent with broad-spectrum bactericidal activity against a wide range of common pathogens, including β-lactamase producing strains.
Dosage
- Different dosages for adolescents, adults, and pediatric patients
- Tablet or Suspension administration
- Parenteral administration for severe infections or surgical prophylaxis
- Dosage for Community acquired pneumonia and MDR Typhoid Fever
Administration
Freshly reconstituted solution recommended, good stability for at least 24 hours at room temperature or 48 hours at 5°C

Contraindications
Contraindicated in patients with known allergy to Cephalosporins
Side Effects
- Infrequent and generally mild and transient adverse effects
- Reported effects include rashes and gastrointestinal disturbances
- Prolonged use may result in the overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms

US FDA pregnancy category of Cefuroxime is B, caution advised during pregnancy and lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- Use with care in patients receiving concurrent treatment with potent diuretics
- Patients with history of colitis
- Safe for patients hypersensitive to penicillin, although cross reactions have been reported
