Indications

  • Treatment of pharyngitis/tonsillitis caused by Streptococcus pyogenes
  • Treatment of acute bacterial otitis media caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis
  • Treatment of acute bacterial maxillary sinusitis caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae or Haemophilus influenzae
  • Treatment of lower respiratory tract infections including pneumonia caused by various pathogens
  • Treatment of skin and skin-structure infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus pyogenes
  • Treatment of urinary tract infections caused by E.coli or Klebsiella pneumoniae
  • Treatment of bone and joint infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus
  • Treatment of gonorrhoea caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae
  • Treatment of early Lyme disease caused by Borrelia burgdorferi

Pharmacology

Well-characterized and effective antibacterial agent with broad-spectrum bactericidal activity against a wide range of common pathogens

Dosage

  • Tablet or Suspension:
    • Different dosages for adolescents, adults, and pediatric patients based on infection type
    • For adults: 250-500 mg b.i.d. for 5-14 days
    • For pediatric patients: 20-30 mg/kg/day b.i.d. for 5-10 days
  • Parenteral:
    • Dosage for adults, children, and neonates based on infection type
    • In severe infections, dose can be increased
    • Specific dosages for surgical prophylaxis, pneumonia, acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, gonorrhoea, meningitis, and bone and joint infections

Administration

Freshly reconstituted solution is recommended; maintains potency for at least 24 hours at room temperature or 48 hours at 5°C

Contraindications

Contraindicated in patients with known allergy to Cephalosporins

Side Effects

  • Adverse effects include rashes and gastrointestinal disturbances
  • Prolonged use may result in the overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms (e.g., Candida)

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Pregnancy: Category B; should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed
  • Lactation: Excreted in human milk; caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman

Precautions & Warnings

  • Given with care to patients receiving concurrent treatment with potent diuretics
  • Patients with a history of colitis should receive with care
  • May be given safely to patients hypersensitive to penicillin with low risk of cross reactions
