Indications

  • Treatment of infections caused by sensitive bacteria
  • Bacterial infections including pharyngitis/tonsillitis, acute otitis media, bacterial sinusitis, pneumonia, bronchitis, skin and skin-structure infections, urinary tract infections, bone and joint infections, gonorrhea, and early lyme disease

Pharmacology

  • Broad-spectrum bactericidal activity against common pathogens
  • Good stability to bacterial β-lactamase
  • Active against many ampicillin-resistant and amoxycillin-resistant strains

Dosage

  • Adolescents and adults dosage for various infections
  • Paediatric patients dosage
  • Parenteral dosage for adults, children, neonates
  • Dosage for surgical prophylaxis, pneumonia, acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, meningitis, and bone and joint infections

Administration

Freshly reconstituted solution recommended, maintains potency for at least 24 hours at room temperature or 48 hours at 5<sup>o</sup>C

Contraindications

Contraindicated in patients with known allergy to Cephalosporins

Side Effects

  • Adverse effects have been generally mild and transient
  • Reported effects include rashes, gastrointestinal disturbances
  • Prolonged use may result in the overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms e.g. Candida

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • US FDA pregnancy category B
  • No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
  • Excreted in human milk, caution should be exercised during lactation

Precautions & Warnings

  • Careful with concurrent treatment with potent diuretics and history of colitis
  • Cephalosporin antibiotics may be given safely to patients hypersensitive to penicillin
  • Cross reactions have been reported but not likely at recommended dose levels
