Description
- Cefuxet Plus 500 mg Tablet is a bactericidal second generation cephalosporin antibiotic indicated for the treatment of various infections caused by sensitive bacteria. The tablet contains Cefuroxime, which inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis, and Clavulanic acid, a beta lactamase inhibitor that provides protection of Cefuroxime from degradation by beta lactamase enzymes.
Dosage and Administration
- 250 mg b.i.d. for 5-10 days for Pharyngitis/tonsillitis
- 250-500 mg b.i.d. for 10 days for Acute bacterial maxillary sinusitis
- 250-500 mg b.i.d. for 10 days for Uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections
- 1000 mg b.i.d. single dose for Uncomplicated Gonorrhoea
- 500 mg b.i.d. for 5-10 days for Community acquired pneumonia
Age Group
- Adolescents (13 years and older)
- Paediatric Patients (3 months to 12 years)
Indications
- Treatment of infections caused by sensitive bacteria
- Pharyngitis/Tonsillitis caused by Streptococcus pyogenes
- Acute Bacterial Otitis Media caused by various strains
- Uncomplicated urinary tract infections caused by E.coli or Klebsiella pneumoniae
- Bone and Joint Infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus
Pharmacology
- Cefuroxime is active against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative susceptible organisms
- Clavulanic acid provides protection of Cefuroxime from degradation by beta lactamase enzymes
Interaction
- Concomitant administration of probenecid with Cefuroxime-Clavulanic Acid increases the area under the serum concentration versus time curve by 50%
- Drug that reduces gastric acidity may result in a lower bioavailability of Cefuroxime
Contraindications
- Known allergy to cephalosporin
- Pseudomembranous Colitis
Side Effects
- Nausea

- Abdominal discomfort or pain
- Rare cases of renal dysfunction, anaphylaxis, angioedema, pruritis, rash
Pregnancy and Lactation
- Avoid in the first trimester if possible
- Can be safely used in later pregnancy to treat urinary and other infections
- Excreted into breast milk in small quantities
Precautions and Warnings
- Given with care to patients receiving concurrent treatment with potent diuretics
- Care for patients with a history of colitis
