Pharmacology
- Bactericidal second generation cephalosporin antibiotic
- Active against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative susceptible organisms
- Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis
- Clavulanic acid as a beta lactamase inhibitor
- Protection of Cefuroxime from degradation by beta lactamase enzymes
- Solution for the treatment of bacterial infections caused by beta lactam resistant bacteria
Dosage & Administration
- 250 mg b.i.d. for adolescents and adults
- 20 mg/kg/day b.i.d. for pediatric patients
- Different dosages for various conditions such as Pharyngitis, Acute bacterial maxillary sinusitis, Acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, Uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections, Uncomplicated urinary tract infections, Uncomplicated Gonorrhoea, Community acquired pneumonia, MDR Typhoid Fever, Early Lyme disease
- Tablet may be taken without regard of food
Interaction
- Concomitant administration of probenecid increases the area under the serum concentration versus time curve by 50%
- Drug that reduces gastric acidity may result in a lower bioavailability of Cefuroxime
Contraindications
- Known allergy to cephalosporin
- Pseudomembranous Colitis
Side Effects
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Abdominal discomfort or pain
- Prolonged administration may result in overgrowth of nonsusceptible microorganisms
- Rarely renal dysfunction, anaphylaxis, angioedema, pruritis, rash, serum sickness like urticaria
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Avoidance in the first trimester if possible
- Safe for use in later pregnancy to treat urinary and other infections
- Excreted into breast milk in small quantities
Precautions & Warnings
- Given with care to patients receiving concurrent treatment with potent diuretics
- Care in patients with history of colitis
