Indications
- Treatment of infections caused by sensitive bacteria such as pharyngitis/tonsillitis, otitis media, sinusitis, pneumonia, bronchitis, skin infections, urinary tract infections, gonorrhea, Lyme disease, septicemia, meningitis, and switch therapy
Pharmacology
- Cefuroxime is a bactericidal second generation cephalosporin antibiotic. Clavulanic acid is a beta lactamase inhibitor that protects cefuroxime from degradation by beta lactamase enzymes and provides a solution for the treatment of bacterial infections caused by beta lactam resistant bacteria
DosageAndAdministration
- 250-500mg b.i.d. for adults and 20-30mg/kg/day b.i.d. for pediatric patients for various durations depending on the condition
Interaction
- Concomitant administration of probenecid with Cefuroxime-Clavulanic Acid increases serum concentration. Drugs that reduce gastric acidity may lower bioavailability of Cefuroxime
Contraindications
- Known allergy to cephalosporin, Pseudomembranous Colitis
SideEffects
- Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, overgrowth of nonsusceptible microorganisms, rare cases of renal dysfunction, anaphylaxis, angioedema, pruritus, rash, and serum sickness like urticaria

- Avoid use in the first trimester if possible. Can be used in later pregnancy and excreted into breast milk in small quantities

- Give with care to patients receiving concurrent treatment with potent diuretics and with a history of colitis
