Description
- Clacef is indicated for the treatment of infections caused by sensitive bacteria.
- Active against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative susceptible organisms
- Bactericidal second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic
- Cefuroxime inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis
- Clavulanic acid is a beta lactamase inhibitor
- Dosage & Administration for adolescents, adults, and pediatric patients
- Increases serum concentration with concomitant administration of probenecid
- Contraindicated in patients with known allergy to cephalosporin & Pseudomembranous Colitis
- Well-tolerated with a few possible side effects
- Safe to use in later pregnancy and excreted into breast milk in small quantities
- Should be given with care to patients receiving concurrent treatment with potent diuretics
- Storage Conditions: Store below 30°C, away from light and moisture

- Pharyngitis/Tonsillitis
- Acute Bacterial Otitis Media
- Acute bacterial maxillary sinusitis
- Lower respiratory tract infections including pneumoniae
- Acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis
- Uncomplicated skin and skin-structure infections
- Uncomplicated urinary tract infections
- Bone and Joint Infections
- Uncomplicated Gonorrhoea
- Early Lyme Disease
- Septicemia
- Meningitis
- Switch therapy (Injectable to oral)
Pharmacology
Active against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative susceptible organisms by interfering with the transpeptidation process
Dosage & Administration
- Adolescents and adults (13 years and older):
- 250 mg b.i.d. for 5-10 days for Pharyngitis/tonsillitis
- 250 mg b.i.d. for 10 days for Acute bacterial maxillary sinusitis
- 250-500 mg b.i.d. for 10 days for Acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis
- 250-500 mg b.i.d. for 5-10 days for secondary bacterial infections of acute bronchitis
- 250-500 mg b.i.d. for 10 days for Uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections
- 250 mg b.i.d. for 7-10 days for Uncomplicated urinary tract infections
- 1000 mg b.i.d. Single dose for Uncomplicated Gonorrhoea
- 250-500 mg b.i.d. for 5-10 days for Community acquired pneumonia
- 500 mg b.i.d. for 10-14 days for MDR Typhoid Fever
- 500 mg b.i.d. for 20 days for Early Lyme disease
- Paediatric Patients (3 months to 12 years):
- 20 mg/kg/day b.i.d for 5-10 days for Pharyngitis/Tonsillitis
- 30 mg/kg/day b.i.d for 10 days for Acute otitis media
- 30 mg/kg/day b.i.d for 10 days for Acute bacterial maxillary sinusitis
- 30 mg/kg/day b.i.d for 10 days for Impetigo
Interaction
Concomitant administration of probenecid increases serum concentration by 50%
Contraindications
Known allergy to cephalosporin & Pseudomembranous Colitis
Side Effects
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Abdominal discomfort or pain
- Prolonged administration may result in overgrowth of nonsusceptible microorganisms
- Rarely (<0.2%): renal dysfunction, anaphylaxis, angioedema, pruritis, rash, serum sickness like urticaria
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Safe to use in later pregnancy
- Excreted into breast milk in small quantities
Precautions & Warnings
Given with care to patients receiving concurrent treatment with potent diuretics
