Indications

  • Treatment of pharyngitis/tonsillitis caused by Streptococcus pyogenes
  • Treatment of acute bacterial otitis media caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis
  • Treatment of uncomplicated urinary tract infections caused by E.coli or Klebsiella pneumoniae
  • Treatment of uncomplicated skin and skin-structure infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus pyogenes
  • Treatment of bone and joint infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus
  • Treatment of uncomplicated gonorrhea caused by penicillinase-producing and non-penicillinase producing strains of Neisseria gonorrhoeae
  • Treatment of early Lyme Disease (erythema migrans) caused by Borrelia burgdorferi
  • Treatment of septicemia caused by Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, E.coli, Haemophilus influenzae, Klebsiella spp.
  • Treatment of meningitis caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Neisseria meningitidis, Staphylococcus aureus
  • Switch therapy (injectable to oral)

Pharmacology

  • Bactericidal second generation cephalosporin antibiotic
  • Active against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative susceptible organisms
  • Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis
  • Clavulanic acid is a naturally derived beta lactamase inhibitor

Dosage & Administration

  • 250 mg b.i.d. for treating pharyngitis/tonsillitis in adolescents and adults (13 years and older)
  • 250-500 mg b.i.d. for uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections in adolescents and adults (13 years and older)
  • 20 mg/kg/day b.i.d for treating pharyngitis/tonsillitis in pediatric patients (3 months to 12 years)
  • 30 mg/kg/day b.i.d for acute otitis media in pediatric patients (3 months to 12 years)

Interaction

  • Concomitant administration of probenecid with Cefuroxime-Clavulanic Acid increases serum concentration
  • Drugs that reduce gastric acidity may result in lower bioavailability of Cefuroxime

Contraindications

  • Known allergy to cephalosporin
  • Pseudomembranous Colitis

Precautions & Warnings

  • Given with care to patients receiving concurrent treatment with potent diuretics
  • Given with care to patients with a history of colitis
