Description
- Indicated for the treatment of infections caused by sensitive bacteria
- Bactericidal second generation cephalosporin antibiotic
- Active against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative susceptible organisms
- Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis
- Protection of Cefuroxime from degradation by beta-lactamase enzymes
- Well tolerated but may cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort or pain
- Excreted into breast milk in small quantities
- Second generation Cephalosporins
Dosage & Administration
- 250 mg b.i.d. for adolescents and adults for various infections
- 20 mg/kg/day b.i.d. for paediatric patients for various infections
- May be taken without regard of food
Interaction
- Concomitant administration of probenecid increases serum concentration versus time curve by 50%
- Drug that reduces gastric acidity may result in lower bioavailability of Cefuroxime
Contraindications
- Known allergy to cephalosporin
- Pseudomembranous Colitis
Side Effects
- May cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort or pain
- Prolonged administration may result in overgrowth of nonsusceptible microorganisms
- Rarely may cause renal dysfunction, anaphylaxis, angioedema, pruritis, rash, serum sickness like urticaria
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Avoid in first trimester if possible
- Excreted into breast milk in small quantities
- Safe to use in later pregnancy to treat urinary and other infections
Precautions & Warnings
- Given with care to patients receiving concurrent treatment with potent diuretics
- Given with care to patients with history of colitis
