Description

  • Indicated for the treatment of infections caused by sensitive bacteria
  • Bactericidal second generation cephalosporin antibiotic
  • Active against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative susceptible organisms
  • Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis
  • Protection of Cefuroxime from degradation by beta-lactamase enzymes
  • Well tolerated but may cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort or pain
  • Excreted into breast milk in small quantities
  • Second generation Cephalosporins

Dosage & Administration

  • 250 mg b.i.d. for adolescents and adults for various infections
  • 20 mg/kg/day b.i.d. for paediatric patients for various infections
  • May be taken without regard of food

Interaction

  • Concomitant administration of probenecid increases serum concentration versus time curve by 50%
  • Drug that reduces gastric acidity may result in lower bioavailability of Cefuroxime

Contraindications

  • Known allergy to cephalosporin
  • Pseudomembranous Colitis

Side Effects

  • May cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort or pain
  • Prolonged administration may result in overgrowth of nonsusceptible microorganisms
  • Rarely may cause renal dysfunction, anaphylaxis, angioedema, pruritis, rash, serum sickness like urticaria

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Avoid in first trimester if possible
  • Excreted into breast milk in small quantities
  • Safe to use in later pregnancy to treat urinary and other infections

Precautions & Warnings

  • Given with care to patients receiving concurrent treatment with potent diuretics
  • Given with care to patients with history of colitis
