Indications
- Treatment of mild to moderate infections in adults and adolescents
- Acute Bacterial Exacerbation of Chronic Bronchitis
- Community Acquired Pneumonia
- Pharyngitis
- Tonsillitis
- Uncomplicated Skin and Skin-Structure Infections
Pharmacology
- Preparation of Cefditoren Pivoxil
- Broad spectrum third generation cephalosporin antibiotic
- Prodrug hydrolyzed by esterases during absorption
- Bactericidal activity against gram-positive and gram-negative pathogens
- Inhibition of cell wall synthesis via affinity for penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs)
- Stable in the presence of a variety of β-lactamases
Dosage & Administration
- Taken after meals
- 400 mg twice daily for 14 days for Community-Acquired Pneumonia
- 400 mg twice daily for 10 days for Acute Exacerbation of Chronic Bronchitis
- 200 mg twice daily for 10 days for Pharyngotonsillitis and Acute Sinusitis
- 200 mg twice daily for 10 days for Uncomplicated Skin and Soft Structure Infections
Interaction
- Antacids and Famotidine reducing oral absorption
- Probenecid increasing plasma exposure
- No effect on the pharmacokinetics of ethinyl estradiol
Contraindications
- Known allergy to the cephalosporin class of antibiotics or any of its components
- Contain sodium caseinate, a milk protein; not recommended for patients with milk protein hypersensitivity

Precautions & Warnings
- Not recommended for prolonged antibiotic treatment
- Prescribing in the absence of proven or strongly suspected bacterial infection is unlikely to provide benefit and increases the risk of drug-resistant bacteria
Use in Special Populations
- Not recommended for pediatric patients less than 12 years of age
- No dose adjustments necessary in geriatric patients with normal renal function
- Dose adjustments for patients with renal and hepatic impairment
Overdose Effects
- Adverse effects may include nausea, vomiting, epigastric distress, diarrhea, and convulsions
- Hemodialysis may aid in removal from the body, particularly if renal function is compromised
