Description

• Orally active cephalosporin antibiotic with marked in-vitro bactericidal activity against a wide variety of Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms.

Therapeutic class

• Third generation cephalosporins

Indications

• Treatment of Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (URTI)
• Treatment of Lower Respiratory Tract Infections (e.g. bronchitis)
• Treatment of Urinary Tract Infections (e.g. cystitis, pyelonephritis)

Pharmacology

• Bactericidal against broad spectrum of gram positive and gram negative bacteria at easily achievable plasma concentrations
• Kills bacteria by interfering in the synthesis of bacterial cell wall

Dosage administration

• Usual course of treatment is 7-14 days
• Recommended adult dosage: 200-400 mg daily
• Recommended dosage for children: 8 mg/kg/day
• Dosage in Renal Impairment: Administered in presence of impaired renal function

Interaction

• Increases in prothrombin times have been noted in a few patients, caution advised in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy

Contraindications

• Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics

Side effects

• Most adverse reactions observed were mild and self-limiting
• Frequent side-effects: diarrhoea, stool changes, nausea
• Less frequent side-effects: abdominal pain, headache, dizziness

Pregnancy lactation

• Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
• Caution advised when administered to a nursing women

Precautions warnings

• Given with caution to patients showing hypersensitivity to other drugs
• Given with caution to penicillin-sensitive patients
• Administered with caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
• Use in pregnancy and lactation: Not recommended unless considered essential by physician

Overdose effects

• Gastric Lavage may be indicated; no specific antidote exists
• No significant removal from circulation by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis
