Indications
- Treatment of Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (URTI)

Pharmacology
- Orally active cephalosporin antibiotic
- Third generation semisynthetic cephalosporin antibiotic
- Bactericidal against a broad spectrum of gram positive and gram negative bacteria
- Kills bacteria by interfering in the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
- Highly stable in the presence of Beta-lactamase enzyme
- About 40%-50% absorption whether administered with or without food
Dosage & Administration
- Usual course of treatment is 7 days
- Adult dosage of 200-400 mg daily
- Recommended dosage for children is 8 mg/kg/day
- Dosage adjustment in severe renal impairment
- Dosage for children in typhoid
- Safety and efficacy not established in children aged less than 6 months
Interaction
- Increases in prothrombin times noted in few patients
- Care should be taken in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal disturbances including diarrhoea and stool changes
- Nausea, abdominal pain, dyspepsia, vomiting, and flatulence
- Headache and dizziness
- Hypersensitivity reactions including rash, pruritis, and urticaria
- Hematological and clinical chemistry reactions
- Mild transient change in liver and renal function tests
- Genital pruritis and vaginitis
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
- Drug should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed
- Caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman
Precautions & Warnings
- Given with caution to patients who have shown hypersensitivity to other drugs
- Given with caution to penicillin-sensitive patients
- Administered with caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
- Use in pregnancy and lactation should be avoided unless considered essential by the physician
Overdose Effects
- Gastric Lavage may be indicated
- No specific antidote exists
- Not removed in significant quantities from the circulation by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis
