Description
Afix DS is an orally active cephalosporin antibiotic with marked in-vitro bactericidal activity against a wide variety of Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms. It is indicated for the treatment of upper respiratory tract infections, lower respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, and other acute infections caused by susceptible microorganisms.
DosageInstructions
- Usual course of treatment is 7 days, may be continued for up to 14 days if required
- Adult dosage: 200-400 mg daily according to severity of infection
- Children dosage: 8 mg/kg/day, dosage in typhoid: 5 mg/kg body weight twice daily for 10-14 days
- Dosage in renal impairment: not to exceed 200 mg once daily if creatinine clearance is less than 20 ml/min
Pharmacology
Cefixime is a third generation semisynthetic cephalosporin antibiotic for oral administration. It is bactericidal against a broad spectrum of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria by interfering in the synthesis of bacterial cell wall.
Interaction
Increases in prothrombin times have been noted in a few patients; caution required in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy

Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics

- Gastrointestinal disturbances: diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain
- Central nervous system: headache, dizziness
- Hypersensitivity reactions: rash, pruritis, urticaria
- Hematological and clinical chemistry: thrombocytopenia, leukopenia
- Miscellaneous: genital pruritis, vaginitis

No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women; caution advised during pregnancy and lactation

- Given with caution to patients with hypersensitivity to other drugs
- Caution in penicillin-sensitive patients due to partial cross-allergenicity
- Administered with caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
