Indications

  • Treatment of upper respiratory tract infections
  • Treatment of lower respiratory tract infections
  • Treatment of urinary tract infections
  • Demonstrated efficacy against specific pathogens
  • Bactericidal activity against a wide variety of organisms

Pharmacology

  • Third generation semisynthetic cephalosporin antibiotic
  • Bactericidal against broad spectrum of gram positive and gram negative bacteria
  • Interferes with synthesis of bacterial cell wall
  • High stability in the presence of Beta-lactamase enzyme
  • Approximately 40-50% absorption with or without food

Dosage & Administration

  • Usual course of treatment is 7 days, extendable to 14 days if required
  • Recommended adult dosage of 200-400 mg daily
  • Dosing adjustment for children based on age and weight
  • Special dosage regimen for typhoid treatment
  • Caution and dosage adjustment in patients with severe renal impairment

Interaction

  • Possible increase in prothrombin times in some patients
  • Careful consideration in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics

Overdose Effects

  • Potential need for gastric lavage in case of overdose

  • Limited removal from circulation by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis
  • Inconclusive adverse reactions in healthy volunteers receiving single doses up to 2 g
