Indications
- Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (URTI)
- Lower Respiratory Tract Infections
- Urinary Tract Infections
Causing Organisms
- Streptococcus pneumonia
- Streptococcus pyogenes

- Klebsiella species
- Haemophilus influenzae

Pharmacological Action
Bactericidal activity against a broad spectrum of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria
Absorption
About 40% to 50% whether administered with or without food
Dosage & Administration
- Usual course of treatment is 7 days
- Recommended adult dosage is 200-400 mg daily for adults and children over 10 years
Dosage & Administration for Children
- Recommended dosage for children is 8 mg/kg/day
- Specific daily doses for different age groups
Dosage in Renal Impairment
A dose of 200 mg once daily should not be exceeded if creatinine clearance is less than 20 ml/min
Interaction
Increases in prothrombin times have been noted in a few patients
Contraindications
Known hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics

Pregnancy & Lactation
- No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women

- Caution to penicillin-sensitive patients
- Caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
