Mode of Action

  • Bactericidal action
  • Interferes in bacterial cell wall synthesis
  • Stable in the presence of Beta-lactamase enzyme

Absorption

  • 40-50% absorption with or without food

Recommended Adult Dosage

  • 200-400 mg daily

Elderly Dosage

  • Same as recommended for adults, with dosage adjustment in severe renal impairment

Children Dosage

  • 8 mg/kg/day for children, dosage based on age and body weight

Typhoid Dosage for Children

  • 5 mg/kg body weight twice daily for 10-14 days

Renal Impairment Dosage

  • Dose adjustment for patients with creatinine clearance less than 20 ml/min

Interaction with Anticoagulant Therapy

  • May increase prothrombin times

  • Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics

  • Caution in markedly impaired renal function
  • Alteration of normal flora of the colon
  • Not recommended for use in pregnancy or nursing mothers unless essential

Overdose Effects

  • Gastric Lavage may be indicated
  • No specific antidote available
  • Not significantly removed by dialysis
