Description
- Orally active cephalosporin antibiotic
- Bactericidal activity against a wide variety of Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms
- Marked in-vitro bactericidal activity
- Highly stable in the presence of Beta-lactamase enzyme
- Usual treatment course is 7 days
- Adult dosage: 200-400 mg daily
- Absorption: about 40% to 50% with or without food
- Pharmacological action: interfering in the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
- Bactericidal against a broad spectrum of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria
- Dosage in renal impairment
- Storage temperature: Below 30°C, protected from light & moisture
- Molecular Formula: C16H15N5O7S2
- Therapeutic class: Third generation cephalosporins
- Caution for patients receiving anticoagulant therapy
- Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics

Mode of Action
- Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis
- High stability in the presence of Beta-lactamase enzyme
Dosage & Administration
- Usual course of treatment is 7 days, may be continued for up to 14 days if required
- Adult dosage: 200-400 mg daily according to the severity of the infection, given as a single dose or in two divided doses
- Recommended children dosage: 8 mg/kg/day, administered as a single dose or in two divided doses
- Specific recommended doses for different age groups of children
- Recommended dose for children in typhoid
- Dosing recommendation for children weighing more than 50 kg or older than 10 years
- Safety and efficacy not established in children aged less than 6 months
- Dosage in renal impairment
Interaction
- Increases in prothrombin times noted in a few patients
- Care should be taken in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy
