Indications
- Treatment of Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (URTI)
- Treatment of Lower Respiratory Tract Infections such as bronchitis
- Treatment of Urinary Tract Infections such as cystitis, cystourethritis, pyelonephritis
Pharmacology
- Bactericidal against a broad spectrum of gram positive and gram negative bacteria
- Kills bacteria by interfering in the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
- Highly stable in the presence of Beta-lactamase enzyme
Dosage & Administration
- Usual course of treatment is 7 days, can be continued up to 14 days if required
- Recommended adult dosage range is 200-400 mg daily
- Dosage for children is 8 mg/kg/day administered as a single dose or in two divided doses
- Dosage in Renal Impairment: Normal dose and schedule may be given in patients with creatinine clearances of 20 ml/min or greater
Interaction
- Increases in prothrombin times noted in a few patients
- Caution should be observed in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal disturbances such as diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting
- Central nervous system effects like headache and dizziness
- Hypersensitivity reactions such as rash, pruritis, urticaria
- Hematological and clinical chemistry reactions such as thrombocytopenia, leukopenia
- Mild transient change in liver and renal function tests
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not enough well-controlled studies in pregnant women
- Should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed
- Caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman
Precautions & Warnings
- Given with caution to patients with known hypersensitivity to other drugs
- Should be given with caution to penicillin-sensitive patients
- Administered with caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
Overdose Effects
- Gastric Lavage may be indicated
- No specific antidote exists
- Cef-3 is not removed in significant quantities from the circulation by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis
