Indications
- Treatment of upper respiratory tract infections (URTI)
- Treatment of lower respiratory tract infections
- Treatment of urinary tract infections (UTI)
- Effective against Streptococcus pneumonia
- Effective against E. coli
- Highly stable in the presence of beta-lactamase enzymes
Pharmacology
- Third generation semisynthetic cephalosporin antibiotic
- Bactericidal against a broad spectrum of gram positive and gram negative bacteria
- Interferes in the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
- Highly stable in the presence of Beta-lactamase enzyme
- Absorption of about 40%-50% whether administered with or without food
Dosage & Administration
- Usual course of treatment is 7 days
- Recommended adult dosage is 200-400 mg daily
- Dosage for children based on age and weight
- Dosage adjustment in severe renal impairment
Interaction
- Increases in prothrombin times noted in a few patients
- Careful usage with anticoagulant therapy
Contraindications
- Not to be used in patients with known hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
Side Effects
- Mostly mild and self-limiting in nature
- Commonly associated with gastrointestinal disturbances
- Possible central nervous system side effects
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Hematological and clinical chemistry reactions
- Mild transient change in liver and renal function tests
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
- Caution advised during pregnancy and lactation
- Excretion in human milk is not known
Precautions & Warnings
- Given with caution to patients with known drug hypersensitivity
- Use in penicillin-sensitive patients with caution
- Administered with caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
- Alteration of normal flora of the colon and potential toxin-mediated diarrhea
Overdose Effects
- Gastric Lavage may be indicated
- No specific antidote exists
- Not removed in significant quantities by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis
