Description
- Orally active cephalosporin antibiotic with bactericidal activity
- Indicated for upper respiratory tract infections, lower respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections
- Effective against bacteria such as Streptococcus pneumonia, Escherichia coli, Haemophilus influenzae, etc.
- Bactericidal against a broad spectrum of gram positive and gram negative bacteria
- Usual course of treatment is 7-14 days
- Absorption not significantly modified by the presence of food
- Patients with known hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics should avoid this medication
- Common side effects include gastrointestinal disturbances, central nervous system effects, hypersensitivity reactions, hematological and clinical chemistry changes
- Safety during pregnancy and lactation is not well-established
- Should be administered with caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
- Storage conditions: Keep below 30°C, protected from light & moisture

Pharmacology
- Bactericidal against gram positive and gram negative bacteria
- Interferes in the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
- Highly stable in the presence of Beta-lactamase enzyme
- Absorption of about 40% to 50% whether administered with or without food
Dosage instructions
- Usual adult dosage is 200-400 mg daily, either as a single dose or in two divided doses
- Recommended dosage for children is 8 mg/kg/day administered as a single dose or in two divided doses
- Dosage in renal impairment: normal dose and schedule may be given in patients with creatinine clearances of 20 ml/min or greater
- No specific antidote exists for overdose, gastric lavage may be indicated
Interaction
- May increase prothrombin times in some patients receiving anticoagulant therapy
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics

Pregnancy and lactation

Precautions and warnings
- Given with caution to penicillin-sensitive patients
- Administered with caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
- Alters the normal flora of the colon and may permit overgrowth of clostridia
Overdose effects
- No specific antidote exists
- Not significantly removed from the circulation by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis
- Adverse reactions did not differ from recommended dose profile in healthy adult volunteers receiving single doses up to 2 g
