Indications
- Treatment of upper respiratory tract infections (URTI)
- Treatment of lower respiratory tract infections
- Treatment of urinary tract infections (UTI)

Pharmacology
- Third generation semisynthetic cephalosporin antibiotic
- Bactericidal against a broad spectrum of gram positive and gram negative bacteria
- Interferes with the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
- High stability in the presence of beta-lactamase enzyme
- About 40% to 50% absorption whether administered with or without food
Dosage & Administration
- Usual course of treatment is 7 days, up to 14 days if required
- Recommended adult dosage: 200-400 mg daily according to severity of infection
- Recommended dosage for children: 8 mg/kg/day
- Dosage adjustment in severe renal impairment
- Recommended dose in typhoid: 5 mg/kg body weight twice daily for 10-14 days
- Safety and efficacy not established in children aged less than 6 months
Interaction
- Increases in prothrombin times noted in some patients
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
Side Effects
- Mild and self-limiting adverse reactions
- Most frequent side-effects: diarrhea and stool changes
- Other gastrointestinal side-effects: nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting
- Central nervous system side-effects: headache and dizziness
- Hypersensitivity reactions: rash, pruritis, urticaria, drug fever
- Hematological and clinical chemistry reactions: thrombocytopenia, leukopenia
- Mild transient change in liver and renal function tests
- Miscellaneous: genital pruritis, vaginitis
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
- Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
- Caution advised when administered to a nursing woman
Precautions & Warnings
- Given with caution to patients with known hypersensitivity to other drugs
- Caution advised for penicillin-sensitive patients
- Administered with caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
Overdose Effects
- Gastric Lavage may be indicated
- No specific antidote exists
- Cefixime is not removed in significant quantities by dialysis
