Description
- Third generation semisynthetic cephalosporin antibiotic
- Orally active with bactericidal activity against a wide variety of Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms
- Indicated for upper respiratory tract infections (e.g., otitis media), lower respiratory tract infections (e.g., bronchitis), and urinary tract infections (e.g., cystitis, pyelonephritis)
- Highly stable in the presence of beta-lactamase enzymes
- Absorption of Cefixime is about 40% to 50% whether administered with or without food
- Recommended adult dosage is 200-400 mg daily according to the severity of the infection, given as a single dose or in two divided doses
- Recommended dosage for children aged 8 mg/kg/day administered as a single dose or in two divided doses
- Recommended dose for typhoid in children is 5 mg/kg body weight twice daily for 10-14 days
- Recommended storage conditions: Keep below 30°C temperature, protected from light & moisture, and out of the reach of children

Pharmacology
- Bactericidal against a broad spectrum of gram positive and gram negative bacteria
- Kills bacteria by interfering in the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
- Highly stable in the presence of Beta-lactamase enzyme
Dosage and administration
- Usual course of treatment is 7 days, may be continued for up to 14 days if required
- Adults and children over 10 years: Recommended adult dosage is 200-400 mg daily according to the severity of the infection, given either as a single dose or in two divided doses
- Elderly patients may be given the same dose as recommended for adults, with dosage adjustment in severe renal impairment
- Children: Recommended dosage for children is 8 mg/kg/day administered as a single dose or in two divided doses
- Typhoid treatment in children: Recommended dose is 5 mg/kg body weight twice daily for 10-14 days
- Dosage in Renal Impairment: Normal dose and schedule may be given in patients with creatinine clearances of 20 ml/min or greater, with a recommended dose of 200 mg once daily for patients with creatinine clearance less than 20 ml/min
- Recommended daily doses in terms of volume of suspension for children based on age
Interaction
- Increases in prothrombin times have been noted in a few patients, so caution is advised in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy
