Indications
- Treatment of Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (URTI)
- Treatment of Lower Respiratory Tract Infections
- Treatment of Urinary Tract Infections
- Effective against Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms
Pharmacology
- Third generation semisynthetic cephalosporin antibiotic
- Bactericidal against broad spectrum of bacteria
- Interferes in the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
Dosage & Administration
- Usual course of treatment is 7 days
- Usual adult dosage is 200-400 mg daily
- Dosage for children is 8 mg/kg/day
- Dosage in renal impairment is adjusted based on creatinine clearance
Interaction
- Increases in prothrombin times in some patients
- Care required in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
Side Effects
- Diarrhea and stool changes
- Nausea and abdominal pain
- Headache and dizziness
- Hypersensitivity reactions like rash and pruritis
- Hematological and clinical chemistry disturbances
- Genital pruritis and vaginitis
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Safety not established in pregnant or nursing women
- Caution advised when administering to a nursing woman
Precautions & Warnings
- Cautious use in patients with hypersensitivity to other drugs
- Cautious use in penicillin-sensitive patients
- Administration with caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
- Alteration of normal flora of the colon
- Not recommended for use in pregnancy or nursing mothers
Overdose Effects
- Gastric Lavage may be indicated
- No specific antidote exists
- Not removed in significant quantities by dialysis
