Indications
- Treatment of upper respiratory tract infections (URTI)
- Treatment of lower respiratory tract infections
- Treatment of urinary tract infections
- Clinical efficacy against commonly occurring pathogens
Pharmacology
- Third generation semisynthetic cephalosporin antibiotic
- Bactericidal against a broad spectrum of gram positive and gram negative bacteria
- Interferes in the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
- Highly stable in the presence of Beta-lactamase enzyme
Dosage & Administration
- Usual course of treatment is 7 days
- Recommended adult dosage is 200-400 mg daily for severe infections
- Dosage adjustment in elderly and severe renal impairment
- Recommended dosage for children based on age and weight
Interaction
- Increases in prothrombin times in some patients receiving anticoagulant therapy
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
Side Effects
- Mild and self-limiting adverse reactions observed
- Gastrointestinal disturbances like diarrhea and stool changes
- Hypersensitivity reactions like rash, pruritis, and urticaria
- Hematological and clinical chemistry effects like thrombocytopenia
- Mild transient change in liver and renal function tests
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
- Caution advised during pregnancy and lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- Cautious administration in patients with hypersensitivity to other drugs
- Partial cross-allergenicity between penicillins and cephalosporins
- Caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
- Alteration of normal flora of the colon and risk of antibiotic-associated diarrhea
Overdose Effects
- Gastric Lavage may be indicated in case of overdose
- No specific antidote exists
- Adverse reactions in healthy adult volunteers receiving high doses did not differ from recommended doses
