Mode of Action

  • Bactericidal against a broad spectrum of gram positive and gram negative bacteria

Dosage & Administration

  • Usual course of treatment is 7 days
  • Absorption not significantly modified by the presence of food
  • Recommended adult dosage is 200-400 mg daily
  • Recommended dosage for children is 8 mg/kg/day

Interaction

  • Increases in prothrombin times noted in a few patients

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics

  • Commonly associated with gastrointestinal disturbances, central nervous system effects, and hypersensitivity reactions
