Indications

  • Treatment of Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (URTI)
  • Treatment of Lower Respiratory Tract Infections
  • Treatment of Urinary Tract Infections
  • Efficacy against Streptococcus pneumonia
  • Efficacy against Escherichia coli
  • Efficacy against Proteus mirabilis
  • Efficacy against Haemophilus influenzae
  • High stability in the presence of beta-lactamase enzymes

Pharmacology

  • Third generation cephalosporin antibiotic
  • Bactericidal against broad spectrum of bacteria
  • Interferes in the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
  • High stability in the presence of beta-lactamase enzyme
  • About 40% to 50% absorption with or without food

Dosage & Administration

  • Recommended adult dosage: 200-400 mg daily
  • Usual course of treatment is 7 days
  • Continuation for up to 14 days if required
  • Dosage for children over 10 years
  • Dosage for elderly patients
  • Dosage for children based on age and weight
  • Special dosage for typhoid in children
  • Dosage in renal impairment

Interaction

  • Potential increase in prothrombin times in some patients
  • Careful administration in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
